Once convicted of a DWI, you could be ordered by a judge to have an ignition interlock device installed for a set number of months or years. Understanding how the device works will help you get an idea of what to expect during the many days that the device is installed in your vehicle.

How do you get the device installed?

Once your state has sent you a requirement letter to have the device installed, you will then have to find an interlock device vendor to work with. If you live in a rural area, this could be difficult. You will be provided a list of vendors for your state. You will then have to call each one on the list until you find a vendor that provides service in your area.

You will then set up an appointment with the auto shop that provides services for the vendor to have the device installed. Typically, installation takes roughly an hour.

Are you allowed to drive as soon as the device is installed?

In most states, no. You will have to have someone else drive your car to and from the auto shop for the installation. Once installed, you will receive a document proving that the device has been installed. That document is taken to the driver's license center. There, you will get a photo card to have a restricted interlock device license made. Until you get this license, you are not permitted to drive your vehicle.

How does the device work?

Before you can start your vehicle, you must blow in, suck out and blow in once more. The device samples your breath looking for any trace of alcohol on your breath. If it senses alcohol, your car will not start.

You will also be required to submit breath samples while driving your vehicle. The amount of time between each test varies from state to state, but in many cases, it is fifteen to thirty minutes.

Failure to submit and pass a test could void your ability to drive with the device. You will be ordered to have the device removed from your vehicle and your license will remain suspended until further action is taken by the state.

Working with a DWI lawyer could help you gain early access to a limited interlock license. This could allow you the ability to drive to work, doctor's appointments, school or church. Contact your local DWI lawyer, like David A. Mansfield, to discuss the possibility of applying for an ignition interlock license.

About Me
lost a loved one to negligence? What now?

Have you recently lost a loved one to a tragedy? If you have lost a loved one at the fault of someone else, it is time for you to make that person accept the responsibility for his or her neglect. Having gone through the wrongful death process myself, I have learned quite a bit about how the system works. I was filled with questions and was fortunate to have a patient and understanding lawyer working with me. I have compiled everything that I had learned through that time into one site to help others going through one of the most difficult times in their lives.
